Products and End Uses of Cloves

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Clove products may be considered in three main forms: firstly, clove buds, which, as well as being widely used in their own right, are utilized in the preparation of the ground spice, an oleoresin, and for the distillation of clove bud oil; secondly, clove stem oil, used principally per se; and finally, clove leaf oil, also used per se but principally as a source of its main constituent, eugenol.

The quality of the dried spice is influenced by a number of factors which include the care taken in the harvesting, drying, cleaning and sorting operations and the conditions used for storage.

Termites never attack mature healthy trees, but will damage roots and stems of trees in a moribund condition. The red tree ant, Oecophylla longinoda Latr., known in Zanzibar as maji-ya-moto (`hot water’), is a serious nuisance in a clove plantation. It makes large nests about 15 cm in diameter by manipulating its larvae to sew the leaves together. The very active, pugnacious workers move up and down the trunk and limbs on foraging expeditions.

D. Pia

Monday, April 28th, 2008

For an exhibition it was decided to group about nine plants of D. Pia in a container about 3 ft. in diameter. To keep them in position the pots were plunged in moist sphagnum peat. Following the exhibition the plants were returned to the nursery and, being an attractive arrangement, they were left in the large container. Some two years later the plants were still grouped together.

A few purchasers may well enjoy this treat, but for the few that do there must be many thousands who only see the leaves fold together when they poke them with a matchstick and in a short space of time watch the rapid decline of the plant.

The yams are started from potato-like tubers and make excellent climbers for the garden room; in fact, in good conditions you can almost see them grow. When purchasing the dormant tubers it is most important to stipulate that you want only the variegated form, as the plain-leaved plants are not especially attractive. Having acquired the tubers it is again important to ensure that adequate heat is available for’ starting them into growth ; a temperature around the pots in the region of 22C. (72′F.) is about right.

How to create a deck plan

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Planning to construct a deck adjacent to your home is cool. It will be the place to hold recreational activities like parties or just communing with nature. You can also add different accessories like mechanical water falls, flower beds and planters, and deck beds. You can also opt for an awning or standard shade, whichever you think is best for the deck plan. All through it all, you have to ensure that you have perfect deck plan sections so as to enjoy the outcome of your plans and construction.

Creating a deck plan is so much easy especially if you know how to go about the measurements and plotting. In case you are having a bit of difficulty over the task, you can always avail the help of a professional designer or architect; although the size and budget will also matter. In case you have a meager plan to design, opt for a small time designer and leave the big projects to an architect. But if you think it will be worth the budget then go for the better man for the job.

Gloriosa

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

There are a number of Gardenia available, but this is the species most frequently met with. Healthy plants develop into compact bushes of glossy green leaves, producing double white flowers with an almost overpowering scent during the summer months, and for this reason alone they are worthy of inclusion in a collection of plants.

When they have attained reasonable size the seedlings can be planted directly into 5-in. half- pots filled with a mixture similar to that suggested for saintpaulias. For most of the squat plants that are similar to gloxinias the half-pots are proportionately right, and plants seem more attractive. After flowering the fbliage will die down quite naturally, and water should be withheld and the tubers kept dry until they are repotted in the spring.

Propagate from seed sown in good heat in February, or from offsets of older tubers when they are potted.

Light and airy surroundings plus standard house plant treatment will ensure success. Being fairly rapid in growth they should be potted on annually using J.I.P.3, and a little extra feeding will help. Easily propagated from seed sown in heat in March, or from cuttings taken with a heel of the old wood in the spring.

Home Decorating Options Using Vinyl Lettering

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Some people may wonder how vinyl lettering has anything to do with home dcor and interior design. Some may even say its a bit tacky. However, in my experience those people are quickly won over once they use decorative vinyl lettering one time in their home. Once youve used it, seen its beauty and how creative you can be in using it to create dcor and crafts, its no wonder to see why its quickly catching on as one of the faster growing trends in interior decoration.

Back in the good ole days vinyl lettering was used primarily for business signage, automotive, and boat lettering. But, that has all changed. As of recently vinyl lettering has come into the mainstream of interior decorating because of its versatility. Vinyl lettering offers those wanting to create unique and personalized home decor simple, and affordable decorating options. Here are some of the uses of vinyl lettering:

Aphelandra

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

The house plant grower with an experimental turn of mind may well he able to grow on aphelandra plants from one vear to the next if he has at his disposal some simple propagating equipment with which to raise new cuttings. To do this allow the bract to die back and lose its colour before cutting the plant back to a firm pair of leaves.

Growth that appears from the arils of those leaves should he allowed to develop two pairs of leaves of their own before they are severed from the parent plant. A clean cut straight across the stem should be made about half an inch below the lower leaf. Propagate in a pure peat mixture and pot on into a proper growing compost as soon as the plant has rooted through to the sides of the small pot in which it has been propagated.

For the plantsman desirous of obtaining a slow- growing house plant Ardisia could possibly be the ultimate choice. The nurseryman may well sow the seed in the traditional manner in a reasonably high temperature in the spring of one year and find that he is on the board of directors by the time the plant has attained its maximum height of some 4 ft. and is ready to he marketed. Highly improbable, you may feel, but this has actually happened to my knowledge.

Bringing back the scent of flowers

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Are you having a hard time smelling that beautiful rose you just bought? Even if you don’t have a bad cold, smelling flowers can be difficult these days due to years of selective breeding that have diminished their scent.

Fortunately, a group of scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has solved that problem. They’ve found a way to enhance the scent of flowers and implant a scent in those that don’t have one.

In fact, they can even make flowers smell good day and night regardless of the plant’s natural way of producing scent.

In an article published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal, Professor Alexander Vainstein and his research assistant Michal Moyal Ben-Tzvi reported that they have managed to enhance the scent of flowers by tenfold and cause them to emit a scent at different times of the day.

Vainstein, who heads the team at the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment at the above university, said this development is not only important to flowers that rely on scent to attract pollinators but will help boost the appeal of commercial fruits and vegetables.
