Roof is the utmost part of your home, not only because it protects your property from the nature elements, but also because it adds beauty and style to your property. Considering roof as the biggest achievement for their house, one should smartly invest into it.
In earlier days, roofs were meant to provide a covering against the agents that are mentioned above. But nowadays these have become a decorative part of one’s home. Homeowners gratify their homes by installing stylish roofing tiles.
With a large number of roofing materials available today, it is very difficult to pick the one that is most suitable for your roofs. And if you need to choose the best material between the roof shingles and roof tiles, go for good quality roof tiles.
No doubt, roof shingles offers distinguished finish to your custom, luxury home, flip side of these are very detrimental. And so, for proper roof covering one has to move on to tiles made up of ceramic or clay. Timely rotting of your roof shingles is a very agitating process. This is very common problem with the timber shingles and if overcome that by installing bituminous shingles, then that would be a costly affair. The only way to come out of the mess is to use tiles as their roof covering.

October is the month for planting many kinds of bulbs, perennials and vegetables in the South. Lawn planting, too, is at its height, especially preparing lawns for winter color with overplantings of rye grass.
We have gone through a rather difficult summer season of extremely hot weather and severe droughts in many areas. This has left garden soils badly compacted, enough to restrict root growth of lawn grasses and garden plants. This calls for deep preparation of the soil and pulverizing it thoroughly. Ample quantities of peatmoss should be added to heavy clay and sandy soils to improve their texture and moisture-holding capacities.
Some bulbs such as Madonna lilies, freesias, ornithogalums, zephyranthes and leucojums must be planted immediately. Get these in first. The latter part of the month will be too late.
Dutch bulbs are ready for planting the latter part of October: tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, fritillarias, muscari, galanthus, scillas, crocus, anemone, ranunculus and many others. Plant your tulips deeper than is normally recommended, 8 inches in fairly heavy soils and 10 inches in sandy ones.

Since I was a youngster – now many years ago – the face of Thanksgiving has undergone a great change in this good land of ours. But the spirit, under all the modern day camouflage, remains the same. We have quite as much for which to be thankful as had our forebears or the pilgrim fathers before them.
Above all others, I think, gardeners should be thankful. Each year increasing thousands of former prisoners of the big cities are escaping the labyrinths of concrete tunnels and brick and cement corridors and are regaining at least a semblance of that close touch with soil and things growing and open skies which is an important part of our great American heritage.
The plots they acquire and learn to care for may not be as large as grandfather’s farm of yesteryear, but they are sufficient to give them an actual contact with mother earth, and to test their skill – in friendly competition with the neighbors – in cooperating with her to produce flowers and shrubs to beautify the home surroundings, and perhaps at least a few fresh vegetables to refresh palates jaded with transcontinental “fresh” vegetables. There may even be – as in our own personal case – a few shocks of corn, and golden pumpkins to deck the landscape and add to the Thanksgiving atmosphere.

Color, texture, structural form, and areas of space are the implements of design, the materials of which it is composed. Here, there is no substitute for personal taste and creativity. Rules like those for the use of complementary or contrasting colors, the play of soft textures against hard are made only to be broken if the effect is carefully conceived and executed.
Your patio planters, for example, may present a striking picture because they contain flowers in assorted brilliant colors; next door, your neighbor may use only shades of pink and white for equal pleasure. Even a combination of shades of green can be enticing, particularly if textures and light or shadow are used in some original manner.
Using Vines Decoratively
Effective decorating, then, begins with the elements of good design. But with the addition of your own discrimination and originality, the fun begins. Before using vines and hanging plants for indoor or outdoor decoration, try to visualize the whole picture – the room or wall, or the whole garden area. Try to “see” in your mind all elements in relation to each other and to the situation. Then, select plants and containers that suit your intention and create the picture you have in mind.

Garden walling and the benefits are easily seen with the naked eye. They bring an air of majesty to a garden. They can also provide a certain amount of protection for what you have growing in your garden. It keeps people from walking directly into the garden, and many animals will simply go around if confronted by a wall.
But outside the protective benefits, are the beauty and elegance that garden walling can bring. It evokes a kind of mystery and produces a whole new atmosphere from an open garden. Garden walling is an artistic endeavor that can really add to the look and feel of your garden area. Whether you hire professionals, and choose to do your own work, it can really make a huge difference that all can easily see.
Professionals who build these types of brick walls have gained the experience from training and doing that you just don’t get overnight. An amateur will more than likely run into more problems than they ever realized. It really depends on how technical your wall will be, what it’s made of, and just what kind of outcome you’re looking for.

Landscaping a garden will require an investment of both money and time to enable you to plant flowers, trees and shrubs of various types. The time and money will result in benefits for the homeowner as it will increase the value of the property and also possible increase your status within he economy.
The solution to the problem of landscaping a hillside garden is actually pretty simple. The solution is to convert the slope that is in the garden and one of the most popular ways to do this is to create a staircase effect theme into the lands by filling and digging into the sloped area.
The steeped effect can be gained by excavating some of the slope and making it plane and this allows the water to come from the top and seep into the soil so that the soil is kept intact to allow for the healthy growth of plants.

Learning some driveway paving tips is in order for anyone who is thinking of paving their driveway. Tips are good information from people who know from experience, and have firsthand knowledge of, whatever it is that you’re trying to do. With driveway paving, which is a regular cost as far as maintenance goes for many homeowners, tips for determining the cost are good tips to know.
The first step to knowing how much your driveway is going to cost, is to know the size of it. Once you have the measurements, then you can move on to what material you intend to make it out of. You have a lot of options here, but the main ones are either brick, concrete, or asphalt. And once that decision is made, then whether or not to use color, and whether or not to use a sealer will be next. Now you’re about ready to add up costs.

If you’ve been learning a little about water filters because you’re convinced of the benefits of drinking clean purified water you will have come across “charcoal water filters” or “carbon water filters” or “activated carbon water filters”. What are these?
Charcoal is a substance created by heating organic matter to high temperature in the absence of oxygen and a charcoal water filter is one that uses charcoal for the filtration process. The organic material commonly used is coconut husks.
Charcoal has various properties, primarily that it is extremely porous and this is what is necessary for successful water filtration. These pores allow water, and contaminants, to pass through and for the contaminants to be absorbed by the carbon by means of chemical attraction, because many carbon based or organic compounds are chemically attracted to carbon.
That is what charcoal, or carbon, water filters are. So what are activated carbon, or what is known as AC, filters? These filters use a form of carbon that is way more porous than normal carbon, and this is created during the manufacturing process.
It’s so porous in fact that it can have up to 20000 square yards of surface area per ounce of activated carbon. That’s really porous.

The growth of unwanted plants and weeds on your roof can drive you crazy as they’re most likely to weaken the structure of your roof. If you live in a hot and humid location then you need to pay extra attention to the moss growing on your roof.
The roots of the moss act as an easy passage for the water to enter into your walls and ceilings.
The most effective way to eliminate the moss accumulated on your roof is to use the household bleaching agent. It would run over the roof and kill every weed and moss. Though this practice is highly effective but it leaves you with certain side-effects as well. The use of a chemical such as a bleaching powder weakens the roof cover a lot and also invites the possibility of gutter corrosion. Hence it should not be used in the first place.
Hence, it is mandatory that the eco-friendly alternatives are arranged to prevent your roof as well the environment from getting affected.
Arrange the necessary supplies that would assist you during the task. Take a long-handled brush, a garden rake, a wheelbarrow and an extension ladder.

Every year the cost of energy increases dramatically. Most of us are surprised by our electricity bills when compared to just a few years ago. A lot of homeowners are looking for methods to reduce their energy costs. There are two ways to do this. You can either reduce the amount of energy that you consume or you can find a way to create a proportion of your energy needs through alternative sources. Many people now use wind turbines as these give free energy. It is not too difficult to make your own wind turbine.
If you decide to install a wind turbine then you will see great financial savings in your energy costs as well as helping to protect the environment. Many people now see wind turbines as a more productive means of alternative energy creation when compared to solar cells and panels. This is because wind turbines can produce electricity 24 hours a day. They do not even need a strong wind. Also, if you have a property that is in a remote location where it is not possible to connect to the national grid, then they are ideal. You can easily learn how to make your own wind turbine and harness household wind power to generate your own electricity.
