Vinyl As A Substitute To Wood Doors

Monday, September 6th, 2010

The complete name of vinyl is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Single molecules of vinyl are made to polymerize, or form very long chains. Upon polymerization, the material becomes solid but perhaps flexible depending on the type of polymer and additives. Vinyl is used to make many kinds of things like vinyl records, toys, and pipes. In each case the product is virtually indestructible therefore possessing a long life and durability.

PVC products are found in homes also in the form of vinyl doors and windows. They are attractive for two reasons. One, they are relatively cheap as a construction material. Two, they are quite durable as they do not suffer from warpage and cracking in the sun and rain.

On the other hand PVC does present some disadvantages. One of them is that it is relatively ugly compared to wood or steel. Another is that repair is almost impossible because the vinyl is essentially a single piece piece made of plastic. The most trouble free way to repair a vinyl product is to get a new one.

Vinyl doors and windows are not as popular as some other kinds of materials.

Outdoor Shades And Throwing Fun Barbeques

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Who has not thought about throwing a big party during the summer? Aside from the regular party items needed, such as dishware, cups, tables, chairs, you should also think about adding outdoor shades. Shades will make your party stand out and your guests more comfortable.

Grilling and cooking out is a traditional activity in outdoor summer parties. However, as we all known, the smoke from the coal or gas-cooked food can stain nearby fabrics such as those found on outdoor shades. The key is to cook a little bit aways from all the guests and the shades.

You can get a lot of different types of shades, depending mostly on how much privacy your guests demand, how many guests there are, and the layout of your house. For example, the shades for a large deck or porch would be different for one on the lawn.

Awnings are outdoor shades that most often found attached to the side of a building, the attachment juncture frequently being atop a door or a window. In contrast to retail establishment awnings, the units for private residents are built for entertainment and relaxation of customers. The newest fashion is the retractable awning. One can obtain both manual and powered retractables. The automatic variants are run with motors, which are activated by remote. High-tech detectors auto-retract in the event of buffeting wind or strong rain.

Protecting Healthy Skin With Exterior Shades

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Skin cancer has been on the continual rise in the Western world. The reason for this rise is not clear, but is thought due partially to increasing life spans, as well as reduced intake of anti-cancer nutrients such as vitamin D. However, what is clear is that UV radiation is one causative factor of DNA damage which in turn leads to genetic changes that lie at the heart of skin cancer.

The chemical way of blocking cancer is to slather the surface of the skin with a sunblock agent that absorbs or reflects UV radiation. Ironically, application of these products may cause other kinds of skin-related problems especially in people with heightened sensitivity. A popular alternative is to ensure good shading either through clothing or through outdoor shading.

For the home, adding some sort of exterior shade generates three kinds of benefits. The addition of shades increases the resale value of real estate in a material way. Also, shades improve quality of life by increasing space for entertainment. Finally, exterior shades are beneficial from the health point of view for shielding against UV rays.

Protect The Pool User’s Health With Heating and Shade Installations

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

There is a strong correlation between skin cancer with excessive sun exposure and sunburn. To reduce such risks for pool-related activities, it’s important to prepare your pool area ahead of time. During the summer, adequate shading must be installed to ensure that pool users are protected from the fierce rays of the sun. Here we will discuss three kinds of shades.

Likewise, exposure to cold can weaken one’s immune system or worsen an existing infection. The corresponding way to reduce such risks connected to pool activities is to do winter preparation. During the winter, the pool should be heated artificially for it to be usable. Pool shades come in roughly two types, whereas pool heaters come in roughly three.

In the category of heaters, the most widely used type is gas-based heating. It’s by far the most energy efficient, which should satisfy the green-conscious buyer. It’s also fast acting so it only needs to be turned on when the pool is anticipated to be used. This makes for very low energy costs. The biggest drawback is that gas-based heaters are a bit expensive with only an expected lifespan of 5 years.

Contemporary Outdoor Shade Umbrellas Enhance The Porch And Garden

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The adverse results of excessive exposure to the sun include heavy premature wrinkles, sunburnt skin, and skin-related diseases later in life. Excessive exposure can occur through using the home swimming pool, working in the backyard, or even just lounging on a patio. These mundane and common activities can potentially lead to skin damage from too much sun light.

Outdoor shade usage is one way to help shield against the damage induced by solar radiation. Among the outdoor shades, a relatively cheap but effective option is the umbrella. The width runs from 8 to 10 feet. Most people first see them around personal home pools. Even better is that contemporary manufacturers are providing a host of accessories which extend the usefulness of these umbrellas.

Most people are familiar with the pool umbrella configuration: a center pole holds up the ribs and shade fabric. The problem associated with this configuration is that the center pole gets in the way of everyone’s view. Luckily, modern designers have created a side-post version. An extra side-post “extension” sticks out from the main pole, and holds up the umbrella. This fixes the problem of the obstructed view, but also looks a lot more elegant.

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

You’re sitting in your L.A. living room, a bowl of hot buttered popcorn in your lap, waiting for the opening scenes to roll and the action to begin in your favorite movie, when suddenly… There’s a loud POP!…. And the lights go out!

You begin to stagger through the dark room and as you open the breaker box you smell the burn. You try and flip the breaker but nothing happens so you are left with no choice but to call a Los Angeles electrician.

A few years back electricity was considered a luxury some people even thought that electricity would never even get popular but now everyone seems to have it and thinks that they can’t live without it. Everything we seem to do on a daily basis such as cook, take a shower everything runs on electricity so and when it goes out we think of it as being the end of the world.

Many of us think it is a catastrophe just to change a light bulb when it burns out, we also know how to trip the breaker when it flips but anything else when it comes to electricity we feel lost or in the dark.

Vinyl Flooring: Not What Your Mother Had

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Nearly everyone has seen vinyl flooring at one point or another. However, they may not have realized the floor was vinyl, especially with newer tiles. You can now get vinyl tiles in different-sized squares and in plank shapes that simulate hardwood flooring.

What is Vinyl?

Vinyl tiles are composed of layers to create long-lasting floors. First comes a thick backing, then a printed design showing a realistic pattern, and a protective layer to give the tile durability. Better tiles have an additional protective wear layer made of urethane.

Choosing the Right Flooring

Homeowners have multiple flooring options available today. In addition to vinyl, there is hardwood, carpet, linoleum, slate, rubber, concrete, bamboo, and laminate. Choosing the right flooring depends upon its use. Vinyl tiles can be installed nearly everywhere in a house, even where you expect wet floors.

How Much Does It Cost?

Vinyl tiles cost from $0.29 to $4.00 / sq ft. Choosing better quality tiles, of course, will cost more depending on the thickness, printed design, and color. If you have a professional install it for you, expect to pay as much as $0.75 to $2.00 per square foot.
